Iako često izostavljena u planovima putovanja po Sjevernoj Italiji, Bolonja i te kako ima šta da ponudi turistima.
U Italiji za Bolonju kažu da je „la dotta, la rossa e la grassa“ što bi značilo „obrazovana, crvena i masna“.
Obrazovana je jer je u njoj smješten najstariji evropski univerzitet; crvena je zbog zemljano crvenih (terakota) cigli od kojih je sagrađena većina zgrada, a masna zato što se u njoj dobro jede.
Hrana
Čak i za čuvene italijanske kulinarske standarde, Bolonja je prijestolnica hrane, baš kako bi se i moglo očekivati od postojbine bolonjez sosa (mada se on tako ne zove ovdje). Brojne pijace u centru grada nude veliki izbor svježeg voća, povraća, ribe, peciva i hljeba, a ulica Pratello (Via del Pratello) je idealno mjesto za ručak, kao i okolina studentskog grada u ulici Zamboni. Mada, teško da možete pogriješiti bilo gdje da sjednete da jedete u ovom gradu.
Krivi toranj
Vjerovatni niste znali, ali Bolonja ima krivlji toranj od onog u Pizi. Dvije kule, poznate kao Garisenda i Asinelli predstavljaju simbol grada. Viša kula, Garisenda je toliko nakrivljena da bi joj Krivi toranj u Pizi pozavidio. O njoj je pisao i Dante u svojoj Božanstvenoj komediji (Commedia). Na ovu kulu ne može da se penje, ali može na sestrinsku Asinelli. Ulaznica košta tri eura, ali vrijedi jer se odavde pruža izvanredan pogled na grad. Kule su zaostale iz perioda Srednjeg vijeka, kada su feudalne porodice njima obilježavale svoju teritoriju, a pravile su ih da budu visoke kako bi pokazale svoju moć.
Prolazi pod kolonadama
Bolonja je poznata po svojim brojnim prolazima pod kolonadama (porticoes) u starom gradu. Ovi prolazi osim što su prelijepi i predstavljaju pravi arhitektonski biser, su i odlično sklonište od kiše. Možete tako prošpartati skoro cio grad po kiši, a da ostanete suhi. Nekada su se ovi prolazi koristili kao pijace. Lokalni trgovci bi postavljali svoje štandove unutar kolonada. Po tome je posebno bila poznata ulica Indipendenza gdje postoji utisnuto u pločnik „panis vita, canabis protecto, vinum laetitia“ – Hljeb je život, kanabis je lijek, vino je zabava“, na mjestu gdje su se ove namirnice prodavale.
Crkve
U samom centru grada nalazi se mnogo prelijepih crkava. U crkvi Chiesa della Santa čuvaju se mumificirani ostaci Svete Katarine Bolonjske, a u katedrali San Domenico se nalazi Mikelanđelova statua i klavir na kome je svirao Mocart tokom svoje posjete Italiji.
Čak sedam crkava je posvećeno Svetom Stefanu. One su građene u periodu od šest vijekova u različitim stilovima.
Bolonjski kanali
Nekada je Bolonja bila grad na mreži kanala na kojima su se nalazile brojne vodenice koje su bile potrebne za rad tekstilnih radionica. Većina ovih kanala se danas, nažalost, nalazi ispod ulica i parkirališta.
Bolonja je mali grad sa mnogo toga zanimljivog i zabavnog i sa sjajnom pozicijom koja omogućava brojne dnevne izlete. Odavde se lako i brzo stiže do Modene, Ferare Venecije, Firence, Parme, Ravene ili San Marina. U gradu se nalazi i značajna umjetnička galerija – Pinacoteca Nazionale sa umjetničkim djelima od II vijeka p.n.e pa sve do baroka. Galerija Municipal Art Collections čuva umjetnička djela od XIV do XIX vijeka, a Galleria D’Arte Maggiore i Muzej moderne umjetnosti MAMbo imaju neka od savremenih djela italijanskih umjetnika.
Iako je poznata kao grad sa najstarijim evropskim univerzitetom, Bolonja posjeduje još jedan univerzitet koji je vrijedan pomena – Carpigiani Gelato University, je škola za pravljenje sladoleda (Jasno vam je zašto je italijanski sladoled najbolji na svijetu). Pored njega se nalazi i Muzej sladoleda u kome osim posjete možete sebi priuštiti i sladoledžijsku radionicu.
