Ovaj nekadašnji veliki industrijski centar i jedan od najzagađenijih gradova Francuske, danas je sasvim drugačiji.
Tešku industriju zamjenile su nove tehnologije.Tu su danas sjedišta brojnih farmaceutskih, biomedicinskih i informacionih kompanija, a turizam je u velikom zamahu zbog čega je ovaj grad drugi najbogatiji u Francuskoj. Ovdje je sjedište Interpola, Međunarodne agencije za istraživanje kancera i evropske novinske kuće Euronews.
Lion je i drugi najveći grad u zemlji poslije Pariza. Njegovo metropolitensko područje broji preko 2,2 miliona stanovnika, dok je sam grad, njegov centar zapravo mali i kompaktan.
Grad se razvio na neobičnom ušću Saone u Ronu, na mjestu gdje ova prva pravi veliki zaokret ka jugu i teče gotovo paralelno sa Ronom sve dok se potom naglim zaokretom ne ulije u nju stvarajući neku vrstu poluostrva (presqu’ile) po čemu je stari grad dobio naziv Preskil.
Sa sjevera i zapada grad okružuju dva znamenita brda. Sjeverno brdo je poznato pod imenom Crveni krst jer se na njegovom vrhu nalazi krst iz XVI vijeka napravljen od crvenog i braon kamena. Zapadno brdo se zove Forvijer (Fourvière), a poznato je pod nadimkom „brdo koje se moli“ zbog nekoliko manastira koji se tu nalaze i crkve Notr-dam. Na vrhu brda je smješten i televizijski toranj, urađen kao replika Ajfelovog tornja.
Ova dva brda i poluostrvo čine strogi centar Liona koji se nalazi na UNESCO-ovoj listi svjetske baštine. Posebnost Liona čini srednjevijekovna i renesansna arhitektura i trabule, uski i često veoma skroviti prolazi čija izgradnja datira još iz IV vijeka. Ovi su prolazi kroz istoriju igrali veoma značajnu ulogu, a posebno su bili značajni za vrijeme Drugog svjetskog rata kada su ih za skrivanje i bijeg od okupatorske vlasti koja se u gradu ustoličila koristili članovi pokreta otpora. Zbog čvrstih trgovačkih veza sa Italijom sve do XVIII vijeka kada je grad bio centar trgovine svilom, građene su zgrade po uzoru na italijanske, a grad je dobio brojne i prostrane trgove.
Lion je turistima posebno interesantan kao tipičan francuski gastronomski centar. Nedaleko od grada, na sjeveru, nalazi se čuveni Božole region poznat po istoimenom vinu. Ovaj grad je postojbina jednog od najpoznatijih francuskih nacionalnih jela – coq au vin.
U gradu se nalaze mnoge katedrale, muzeji, pozorišta, opera i balet i on danas predstavlja veoma značajan kulturni centar sa čestim i poznatim festivalima poput Festivala svjetlosti. Ovaj grad je poznat po svojoj dugoj kulturnoj tradiciji. Ovdje su Braća Limijer napravili svoj prvi film zbog čega se u ovom gradu nalazi Limijer Institut.
Aerodrom u Lionu nosi ime slavnog sugrađanina, Antoana de Sent Egziperija, francuskog pisca, autora čuvenog Malog princa i jednog od pionira avijacije.
Do ovog grada se može zgodno stići i iz Ženeve, Pariza ili Marseja. On se nalazi na glavnoj drumskoj i željezničkoj vezi francuske prijestolnice sa Marsejom i Azurnom obalom. Lion je idealna baza za obilazak francuskog Centralnog masiva, uzbudljive geološke regije poznate po brojnim ugašenim vulkanima, prelijepim brdima i dolinama.
