Tim naučnika iz Ukrajine i Ujedinjenog Kraljevstva proizveo je votku od žitarica iz Černobila i sada planira da počne sa masovnom proizvodnjom, kako bi se prve flaše ovog alkoholnog pića u prodaji našle već krajem godine.
Nakon nuklearne katastrofe u černobilskoj nuklearki u aprilu 1986. godine, kada je ekspolodirao nuklearni reaktor, radijacija je ugrozila ne samo Ukrajinu, već cijeli Sovjetski Savez i ostale evropske zemlje. Milioni ljudi bili su izloženi opasnim nivoima radijacije, a bar 30 ljudi je umrlo odmah nakon katastrofe (prve žrtve bili su vatrogasci koji su pozvani da ugase požar u reaktoru). Gradić Pripjat je evakuisan i do danas je ostao napušten. U zoni oko nuklearke stvorena je Zona isključenja u koju je turistima zvanično dozvoljen pristup od 2011. godine.
U Zoni isključenja u kojoj već više od tri decenije nema poljoprivrednih aktivnosti, tim naučnika tokom trogodišnjeg projekta uspio da iz lokalno proizvedenih žitarica napravi votku. Simbolično nazvana Atomik, votka nije radioaktivna. Iako je u žitaricama korištenim za njenu proizvodnju inicijalno detektovan određen nivo radijacije, nakon procesa destilovanja u votki je ostao samo prirodni ugljenik C-14 u istom procentu kao i u drugim alkoholnim pićima. Destilovan alkohol je razrijeđen mineralnom vodom iz izvora koji je lociran 10km od nuklearnog reaktora, ali koji takođe nije kontaminiran. Naučnici su zatim oformili kompaniju „The Chernobyl Spirit Company“ koja će se baviti proizvodnjom i prodajom ove votke, a bar 75% prihoda biće namjenjeno oživljavanju lokalnih zajednica i njihovom ekonomskom razvoju, ali i očuvanju divljine. Ova visokokvalitetna votka će biti prvi proizvod iz ove oblasti siguran za konzumaciju, nakon više od tri decenije.
Naučnici smatraju da u Zoni isključenja ne treba započinjati poljoprivredne aktivnosti, budući da je ona sada pretvorena u rezervat prirode, ali da u dijelovima zone koja je prinudno evakuisana i u kojoj je i dalje formalno zabranjeno naseljavanje, žive ljudi kojima treba omogućiti da uzgajaju hranu. Oni tvrde da bi prinosi iz ovog regiona danas bili sigurni za konzumiranje i bez posebnih procesa za dekontaminaciju.
