Do prije nekoliko decenija, Marmaris je bio malo ribarsko naselje i nosio je naziv Fiskos. Danas važi za jednu od najljepših destinacija na turskoj obali.
Udaljen 150 kilometara od aerodroma Milas, 100 kilometara od Bodruma i 80 kilometara od Kušadasija – Marmaris važi za biser egejske obale.
Poznat je i kao grad koji ne spava, odnosno lokacija na kojoj 24 sata nedjeljno možete pronaći niz interesantnih dešavanja. Duž cijele obale otvoreni su barovi, kafići i restorani – što privlači veliki broj turista koji nakon dugog dana na plaži žele da uživaju u bogatom noćnom životu i sjajnim gastronomskim specijalitetima.
Treba naglasiti da je tokom ljeta dostupan i taksi kojim možete da posjetite neke od turskih i grčkih ostrva, a najpopularnije su posjete Rodosu.
U Marmarisu se možete sunčati na više od deset kilometara obale. Plaže su prilagođene djeci i odraslima, a pijesak je uglavnom crn i šljunkovit. Gornja polovina plaža je prekrivena suncobranima i ležaljkama koje je moguće iznajmiti po pristupačnim cijenama. More je toplo, čisto i idealno za plivanje. Ukoliko želite da posjetite neke od obližnjih plaža – koristite bus dolmuš.
S druge strane, više o istoriji grada možete saznati kroz posjetu Zavičajnom muzeju Kaparcuk (dvorac Marmaris) u kojem nakon posjete možete da kupite suvenir i odmoriti uz šoljicu kafe. Unutar dvorca je smješteno sedam velikih galerija sa posebnim artefaktima sa drevnih nalazišta u okolini.

Nedaleko od bisera egejske obale nalazi se Efes, jedan od najljepših i najbolje očuvanih drevnih turskih gradova. Turisti ovdje mogu da obiđu ostatke jedne od tri najznačanije antičke biblioteke.
U Efesu se nalazi i jednom od sedam svjetskih čuda. U pitanju je hram boginje Artemide, nekad najveće građevine u Grčkoj i najljepše u Efesu. U blizini Marmarisa se takođe nalaze i Pamukale. Prema legendi, kupanje u ovoj vodi podmlađuje ljude.
Još jedna legenda govori o ostrvu Kleopatra, gdje se navodno istoimena egipatska kraljica kupala prije više od 2.000 godina. Ova destinacija svake godine privlači veliki broj posjetioca zbog kristalno čiste vode i prelijepih plaža na kojima se nalazi bijeli pijesak – koji navodno pomaže u liječenju opekotina.

Princeza se zaljubila u lokalnog ribara, pa je zbog susreta s njim nerijetko bježala iz dvorca. Nakon što je njen otac (kralj) saznao za ovu vezu, protjerao je ribara iz grada – što je slomilo princezino srce.
Nastavila je da posjećuje plažu i čeka povratak svoje velike ljubavi. Kad god bi otišla na plažu, šaku pijeska bi bacala u more kako bi napravila put koji vodi prema ribaru.
Nakon što je kralj otkrio njen plan, poslao je čuvare da je dovedu kući. Međutim, bježeći od njih – princeza je pretrčala nekoliko stotina metara plaže i zatim pala u otvoreno more.
