Kefalonija je najveće ostrvo u Jonskom moru. Nalazi se između Lefkade na sjeveru i Zakintosa na jugu. U njenoj blizini je i Itaka, Odisejevo ostrvo, koju je moguće posjetiti tokom boravka na Lefkadi ili Kefaloniji.
Postoji nekoliko legendi o tome kako je Kefalonija dobila ime, a jedna od njih je da potiče od riječi “kefalos” (glava) jer je oduvijek bila centar regije. Ipak, neki smatraju da je taj naziv dobila zbog oblika, s obzirom na to da se sastoji iz dva dijela, pa su je zvali “ostrvo sa glavom”.
Svojim prelijepim plažama i prepoznatljivom tirkiznom bojom Jonskog mora osvaja mnoge turiste. Zanimljivo je da se na Kefaloniji nalazi i više lokaliteta starih civilizacija od značaja za ljubitelje istorije, arheologije i kulture uopšte, ali i nekoliko prirodnih rariteta kao što su podzemno jezero i pećine, piše Putuj sigurno.
Glavni grad ostrva Argostoli nalazi se na njegovoj zapadnoj obali i predstavlja glavnu pomorsku luku ostrva, kao i centralnu bazu Kefalonije od davnih vremena. U njegovoj blizini je i međunarodni aerodrom.
Za turiste je od značaja i gradić Lasi, koji se nalazi u blizini i koji se vremenom razvijao i postao jedno od glavnih mjesta za smještaj. Pogodan je zbog blizine glavnog grada i kao polazna tačka za obilazak ostrva.
Još jedan poznati gradić, odnosno selo, na ostrvu je Fiskardo. Važi za grčki Sen Trope jer se u njegovoj luci uvijek nalazi mnoštvo jedrilica i brodova, ali i zbog mondenskog duha kojim odiše. Poznat je i po lijepo uređenim restoranima i tavernama koji ga krase i daju osjećaj da se nalazite na nekom ekskluzivnijem mjestu. Udaljen je od Agrostolija pedesetak kilometara i jedino je mjesto na Kefaloniji koje zemljotres 1953. godine nije uništio.
Iako do prije nekoliko godina nije bilo mnogo aranžmana koje su domaće turističke agencije organizovale do Kefalonije, ovo ostrvo je bilo poznato kao jedno od izletišta za one koji ljetuju na Lefkadi. Danas je izbor aranžmana veliki, pa se pored uobičajenih tura sve češće organizuju i aranžmani za mlade preko nekih od turističkih agencija.
Kada je u pitanju smještaj, porodice sa djecom najčešće biraju malo mjesto Skala, u kome je sve na dohvat ruke i veoma je lako za organizaciju i prijatan boravak sa djecom. Za mlade je pak zanimljiviji grad Lasi, koji nudi mnogo više što se tiče izlazaka i zabave, a koji se nalazi na nekoliko kilometara od glavnog grada. Oba grada imaju svoje plaže sa ležaljkama i suncobranima za iznajmljivanje, ali većina turista je zainteresovana za odlazak do plaža po kojima je Kefalonija poznata u čitavoj Grčkoj, pa i šire.

Generalno, plaže na Kefaloniji su takve da će sigurno zadovoljiti ukuse mnogih koji se odluče da ih obiđu. Od pješčanih, do šljunkovitih, stjenovitih, zaista je izbor veliki. Najpoznatija je plaža Mirtos, zbog ljepote okruženja u kome se nalazi i boje mora koja ostavlja bez daha sve one koji je posjete. Tu su još i plaža Antisamos, poznata i po tome što su upravo na njoj snimljeni kadrovi filma “Mandolina kapetana Korelija”, zatim, Skala, Xi, poznata još i kao Narandžasta plaža, kao i mnoge druge. Pored toga, tu je i podzemno jezero Melisani. Zovu ga i čudom prirode. Postoje ekskurzije koje uključuju odlazak do jezera, koje se nalazi u blizini mjesta Sami, i vožnju brodićem po jezeru koje se nalazi u pećini, koja ima otvor sa gornje strane, odakle ulazi svjetlost i obasjava bistru vodu sa nevjerovatnim prelivanjem boja.
